We went to the iconic Breakfast Creek Hotel with every intention of getting dinner Friday night. Unfortunately, we didn’t know you needed reservations. Damn! We had heard you didn’t, so hailed a cabbie and took a 5-minute road trip over to the Brekkie Creek. Hey, no worries…live and learn. Side note: “hotel” is often Aussie for “bar” and brekkie is how you say “breakfast.” And before you ask…yes, I will be adding “brekkie” to my vocabulary post-haste.
Well, the nicest bouncer (and most attractive I might add…as most American bouncers are rhino-sized “juice-heads” that often have faces only their mothers could love) advised us to see the hostess and put our names on the wait-list. The problem there was we didn’t know our mobile number, and of course we needed it for the wait-list. Damn again!
So we instead went to the indoor/outdoor bar and ordered two schooners of VB (Victoria Bitter) – once again, best beer I’ve ever had!
Funny little story for ya: Aussie beer’s got “oomph!” and I mean this in a good good (good) way! 4.8% alcohol and sized to equal 1.4 Aussie beers (that’s what ‘schooner’ means…BIG).
That’s not the funny story.
The funny story is that I got drrrrrunk. Big drunk. Off of one schooner. But it’s a nice buzz and doesn’t hit ya till well after you’ve finished it. From what I can remember, it went like this: We finished our beer, hailed a black and white (cabbie) and asked to be dropped off near Creek street – there’s this great area down by the wharf where you will find several different restaurants – ranging in influence from Thai to Italian to traditional Aussie fare. As we walked around the area, reading the menus and trying to decide where to go, I began to feel a bit drunk – in a good way. Though at this point, we were both starving and decided on Italian, except you needed a reservation. Damn! So we walked to the Jade Buddha for some sushi….except…you guessed it! You needed a reservation. Damn yet again! So we walked to the Aussie place…but neither of us felt like octopus or duck.
By this point, I’m quite sure Brian was busy being entertained by yours truly… as once the drink has hit me, I get GIGGLY. We slowly walked up to our hotel. When I say up, I mean UP as Brisbane City is San Francisco-hilly. We stopped in a 7-11 (very different from the American version- no coffee, no lotto…just candy, snacks and drinks really). Brian bought us some TimTams (we’ve discussed this) and two Caramelo Koalas (by far my favorite Aussie candy to date).
Well by this time I’m quite sauced. Between singing up the street, staggering around and stopped every several feet to laugh till I ran out of air, I was more sauced (drunk, grogged ….) than I’ve been in a while.
Anyway, you get the idea – VB – aka “The Drinking Beer”
I do recommend you get one (or two if you’ve got the chops) It’s the best beer I’ve had in a while and by far my fave! I don’t remember dinner….but it involved room service and some Thai rice and ended in me passing out amidst big fluffy white pillows, Caramel Koala wrappers and missing one flip-flop. A good night was had by all.
